The American Rapper, Busta Rhymes, has literally nailed it in the music industry. He has provided us with a lot of entertaining and amazing songs. Some of his outstanding achievements are being included in the list of Top 50 by The Source and being called “one of hip-hop’s greatest visual artists” by MTV.
However, being busy accomplishing everything in the music career had a cost. By focusing entirely on his music career, Rhymes lost the track of his health and ended up being obese. In his interview with Men’s Health, Busta said:
“I was so focused on the music being the best that it could be, I didn’t put any time into taking care of myself”. In this way, Busta developed bad eating and other habits. Those habits had a very negative impact on Rhymes’ health that it didn’t only nearly finish his music career but also became a threat to his life.
The good news, however, is that he has gotten out of those old negative habits that were destroying his mere life. So, the question then is how did he do it. But before that let’s find out how did he reach there in the first place.

How did Rhymes Gain so much Weight?
Rhymes once had a very strict and healthy daily routine. He would do workouts for hours in the gym and would maintain a strict diet. However, things took a different turn in 2019, the busiest and shining period in Busta’s career.
It was the time when the trouble began. One night, after partying for hours, Busta fall asleep in his car and didn’t notice anything. Fortunately, his son saw him and noticed that something was wrong. His son and the security tried to wake him up but Busta wasn’t responding.
“It took us 20 minutes to wake him up”, Busta’s son recalled. At that moment, Rhymes was rushed to the hospital where doctors warned him that Busta had polyps in his throat which caused the swelling. Hence, difficulty in breathing.
Here is how Busta explained the situation, “The doctor told me that if I caught a cold or slept wrong that I could die. It felt like this was on me now, and I had to steer things in a different direction”. This startling realization moved Busta so deeply that he finally embarked on the journey to lose weight.
Busta Rhymes’ Weight Loss Journey
Busta underwent the surgery to get rid of polyps and after that surgery, he was looking forward to keeping his whole health in line. While on the way back home, Busta received the notification on his phone. He was tagged in a video shared by the bodybuilder, Dexter Jackson.
Rhymes’ song, Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See, was playing in the background of Insta’s video. Without wasting a second, Busta DM Dexter. “I told him I needed his help and he replied me right away”, Rhymes told the interviewer.
And this is when Busta’s weight loss journey started. However, there was one condition from Dexter. He wanted Busta to be fully committed to his weight loss plan. To improve his health, Rhymes agreed. Here are the details about how Rhymes succeeded in getting rid of extra pounds.
Busta’s Diet and Workout Plan
Dexter didn’t ask for the American rapper’s commitment for nothing. When he agreed to help Busta in getting lighter he had a well-established plan. The professional bodybuilder instructed Busta to rent a house where he would stay along with a chef and his security.
Busta did the same. They would work out three times a day from Monday to Friday. Rhymes had to follow this routine for exactly 30 days and if he didn’t see any changes he could quit. “We didn’t go out. We just watched movies and recorded songs. Went to bed early, got up, and got back to work”, Busta said.
After every workout session, he would have egg whites or oatmeal. In this way, Busta would eat 12 egg whites on average each day. As 30 days finished, Rhymes noticed remarkable changes in his physique. After his time of agreement was finished with Dexter, they both had different ways.
Dexter had to go to Los Angeles, to get prepared for the Mr. Olympia Competition 2019. Meanwhile, Busta found another trainer, Victor Munoz. He continued to follow an even more strict workout and diet plan.
This was Busta’s weight loss journey that not only saved his career but his life as well. He learned his lesson well and since then has stuck to the same diet and workout routine, which has made him even stronger.
Before & After Weight Loss
When Busta started following Dexter’s weight loss plan, his weight shoot from 260 lbs to 340 lbs. At first, it seemed strange to him but he realized that he wasn’t gaining fat as he had by eating pizza after another pizza. Rather, it was muscles.
However, as Rhymes lost fat with the passage of time, his weight reduced to 200 lbs. He has successfully gotten rid of 100 pounds of unhealthy weight.
What did Rhymes say about his Weight Loss?
When he was asked about his weight loss journey, the American rapper replied, “I ain’t just getting in shape to look good with my music. We are in the eye of the storm of some real shit happening”. Rhymes further said, “And I was raised to protect and provide for my family and my people”.

With his constant effort, Busta succeeded in changing his health for a lifetime. He made the right decision at the right time. By losing 100 pounds successfully, Rhymes has set a very good example for anyone who is looking forward to taking control of their life.
