L-carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative that’s often taken as a supplement. Most of the focus about l-carnitine is regarding its benefits for weight loss, but it also may have an impact on brain function.
However, popular claims about supplements don’t always match up with the science. So before making any serious claims about whether or not it’s an effective supplement, we looked at the research.

This is where the science and research do show the direct effects of l-carnitine on your body’s ability to burn fat. See, inside our cells, we have mitochondria (often referred to as the powerhouse of our cells). One of the main functions of mitochondria is to shuttle fatty acids through the cell wall so they can be converted to ATP and burned off as energy.
L-carnitine plays a big role in helping move the fatty acids across the membrane wall efficiently. So the logic stands that it would have some fat burning benefits, right?
