To celebrate our 30tth anniversary, we’ve put together the Journey to 30 Challenge! It’s four weeks of summer-fun activities to help you stay active, connect with the SilverSneakers community, and have a total blast doing it. This is Activity No. 7. Find the full step-by-step guide here. Acts of gratitude don’t need to be elaborate to be meaningful. In fact, small gestures — like running an errand for a friend or being an active listener — are often much more appreciated than a grand gift tied up with a pretty bow. 

Showing kindness to others can deepen your connections and foster stronger relationships. And that can have a profound impact on your well-being.

Close social ties can help people live longer, healthier lives, according to research published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine. It’s a phenomenon that the study’s authors call the “connection prescription.” 

What’s more, when researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill looked at reams of data from several long-term studies, they found that social relationships are even linked to markers of inflammation, blood pressure, and weight. Individuals with strong social ties and strong support systems have a lower risk of many health conditions that are often associated with aging.

The takeaway? Gratitude is right up there with eating right and exercising regularly. That’s why we made today’s activity all about spreading the love.
